Your fingerprint data is stored securely and never leaves your Pixel or Nexus phone. Your fingerprint data isn't shared with Google or any apps on your device. Apps are notified only whether your fingerprint was verified.

Your mobile device is only as secure as your weakest authentication method. While biometric unlock options share a common goal — to allow users to verify their identity using personal physical characteristics — it’s important to understand which approach will provide the best protection for your device.

Biometric security systems can replace the traditional method of entering passwords or PINs with a swipe of a finger so that the phone can be unlocked and used. Biometric methods embedded in mobile phones include fingerprint recognition, face recognition, signature recognition, voice recognition, and iris Recognition.

Advantages of biometric security. Improved security. Biometric authentication, while not perfect, is much more difficult to hack than traditional logins and passwords. No more memorizing passwords. The need to memorize passwords tempts people into setting weak ones. Biometrics cancels the need to remember anything. No more forgetting passwords.

Biometrics is a possible solution to combat this problem, which dramatically strengthens the security level of the authentication processes too. Companies adopt biometric identification because, in theory, this type of identification – a fingerprint, face, or voice – ensures a high degree of certainty of a user's identity.

You can even find biometrics on phone security systems. For example, the facial recognition technology on Apple's iPhone X projects 30,000 infrared dots onto a user's face to authenticate the user by pattern matching. The chance of mistaken identity with the iPhone X biometrics is one in a million, according to Apple.

Biometrics seem secure on the surface. After all, you’re the only one with your ears, eyes, and fingerprint. But that doesn’t necessarily make it more secure than passwords. A password is inherently private because you are the only one who knows it.

Through what you are, your fingerprint, your hand, your face. The use of biometrics has many benefits. The leading one is the level of security and accuracy* that it guarantees. In contrast to passwords, badges, or documents, biometric data cannot be forgotten, exchanged, stolen, or forged.

The issue is that a 4-digit passcode is not at all secure. In that case, the thumbprint reader is going to be more secure, although still not actually secure. The longer the passcode, the stronger the security. The search space for a 4-digit number-only passcode is 11,100 permutations. That's in line with Apple's 1:10000 estimate.
