up-to-date in real-time. It certainly would not be realistic to expect such a thing. However, when biometrics are applied and used creatively in concert with other factors, even as a nascent technology, biometrics perform far better than other commonly used methods for forensically proving someone’s identity.

The previously mentioned biometric devices are all what would be considered physiological based devices. They are all based upon intrinsic traits that a particular person themselves has. There is an additional broad category of biometric devices based upon behavioral traits of human beings; these include keystrokes, and voice recognition.

58% chose iris recognition. 32% chose fingerprint. Palm vein and facial recognition both got 5% of the votes. It’s interesting that people immediately gravitate towards iris recognition as the most accurate biometric than other modalities, with only fingerprint as a distant second.

Vein recognition or vascular biometrics takes the crown of being the most secure and accurate modality due to so many advantages it inherently offers. Vein pattern is not visible and collectable like facial features (and even fingerprints) but they are also not as hard to collect as retina pattern.

Some modalities may be more cost-effective than others due to the underlying technology or hardware characteristics. It is important to realize that the initial investment done on a biometric system can often be compensated in a short amount of time which leads to faster return on investment (ROI).
