The biometric version of the U.S. passport (sometimes referred to as an electronic passport) has descriptive data and a digitized passport photo on its contactless chips, and does not have fingerprint information placed onto the contactless chip.

The biometric passport is the 3rd generation of digital passports. It, too, has the contactless chip with the same information as the epassport, with the addition of one or two biometrics of the passport holder. This is often one or two fingerprints but could be another biometric identifer such as the iris or face.

Are all United States passports biometric? All passports issued in the United States of America since 2007 have been ePassports. Given that U.S. passports are valid for 10 years , all valid American passports should now be biometric passports.

On the cover do you see a chip symbol - that is how you know it is -- if you don't know what a chip symbol looks like you can google image biometric passport. In the Enhanced Border Security and Visa Entry Reform Act of 2002, the U.S. Congress mandated the use of biometrics in U.S. visas. This law requires that U.S. Embassies and Consulates abroad must issue to international visitors, "only machine-readable, tamper-resistant visas and other travel and entry documents that use biometric identifiers.
