Biometric recognition, or simply biometrics, refers to the automatic recognition of individuals based on their physiological and/or behavioral characteristics. By using biometrics it is possible to confirm or establish an individual’s identity based on who she is, rather than by what she possesses (e.g., an ID card) or what she remembers (e.g., a password).

Biometric authentication. Biometric authentication compares data for the person's characteristics to that person's biometric "template" to determine resemblance. The reference model is first stored. The data stored is then compared to the person's biometric data to be authenticated. In this mode, the question is: "Are you indeed, Mr or Mrs. X?" Biometric identification. Biometric identification consists of determining the identity of a person.
