What happens when you arrive in Canada. If you’re applying for the first time, you need to give your biometrics (unless you’re exempt). See who needs to give biometrics. If you’ve given your biometrics before as part of an application for a visitor visa or study or work permit, your biometrics are probably still valid.

If my visa, work or study permit application is refused, will I have to give biometrics for my next application? I submitted my application with the old permanent residence fees. Will my application be rejected or returned? I submitted my application and paid the processing fee before April 30, 2020.

If you are 79 years old when you submit your application, but you turn 80 years old before you give your biometrics, you must contact your Canadian visa office to make arrangements to have your biometrics collected there. If you are in the United States, you can still give your biometrics at the nearest US Application Support Centre

To study or work in Canada. You need to give your biometrics if you’re between 14 and 79 years old and you apply for a study or work permit. If you plan to study for 6 months or less, you don’t need a study permit and you don’t need to give biometrics.

Typically, the RCMP has committed to releasing biometrics after review within two hours, though the actual wait times are much lower. Biometrics enrollment centres in Canada are scheduled to start from February 19, 2019.

Applicants will receive a notification from IRCC once they have passed the preliminary eligibility assessment (stage 1 of the 2-stage process) and before they give their biometrics.
