Children below the age of 5 need to attend the visa application centre to provide a digital photograph, but are not required to provide their fingerprints. Children below the age of 18 need to be accompanied by an adult and this cannot be a member of VFS Global staff. This is from the UKVI in UAE but the same applies for other places as well.

the UK for a cumulative period of 6 months or less will have to apply for a SSP. The Immigration (Biometric Registration) Regulations 2008 (as amended in 2015) require applicants to enrol their biometric information in the same way as non-EEA nationals who are applying for BRP within the UK.

The problems arose after that as my wife was left waiting over an hour as there appeared to be a breakdown in the numbering system for the biometrics and actual scanning of the documents. No-one appeared to know what was going on once again and a 4pm appointment for which we were allowed in at 3.30 took until 5.30 to be completed.

If you have a 90-day visa in your passport and can’t travel to the UK before it expires you will have to apply online for a replacement visa – and pay a fee for this. Your biometrics (fingerprints and a digital photo) will need to be resubmitted at an appointment. The replacement visa will be valid for 90 days

Sometimes the background checks take a bit longer than others-this is particularly true when you have a common name. For whatever reason, I've noticed cases to take somewhat longer during the summer months. As long as you have a clean record, I would not worry too much about time between the biometrics and the interview.
