How long does it take between biometrics and interview for N-400 (application for naturalization)? It has been 130 days since I did my biometrics for the N-400 application. Every time I check the case status on the USCIS website, it tells me that the application is still under "initial review." Is this normal?

Many people expect to receive a response or next steps from the USCIS within a few weeks of their biometrics appointment. Unfortunately, the wait will be much longer than this. Typically, it can take anything between 5 and 10 months before you get a notice for your green card interview, for example.

According to USCIS records, your application is still pending processing of your fingerprints. Due to COVID 19, biometrics (fingerprint) appointments are pending. At this time, we anticipate you should receive a decision or other notice from USCIS within 60-90 days of this notice. We apologize for any inconvenience caused by delays in processing.

Super priority – get a decision in 24 hours. Read more about processing times here. If your visa is eligible for super-priority, then you will have the ability to choose this during the payment screen. This will give you a decision within 24 hours. Just to note this doesn’t give you a faster biometric appointment.

Consular processing applicants will usually have their biometrics appointment sometime after the U.S. consulate schedules their immigration application interview. The appointment itself is straightforward. It should take about 15 to 20 minutes total.

Once you submit your biometrics information, USCIS will conduct the necessary background checks and send you an appointment notice for the naturalization interview. It is common to receive this letter around four to eight months after filing your form.

When you apply for a benefit from U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) — such as a work permit, citizenship, green card or even a green card renewal — a standard part of the process is a biometrics appointment (also known as a biometrics screening). It may sound scary, but it shouldn’t be a concern for most people.
Preparing for Your Biometric Services Appointment After you file your application, petition, or request, we will schedule your biometric services appointment at a local Application Support Center (ASC) if you need to provide your fingerprints, photograph, and/or signature.
Sometimes the background checks take a bit longer than others-this is particularly true when you have a common name. For whatever reason, I've noticed cases to take somewhat longer during the summer months. As long as you have a clean record, I would not worry too much about time between the biometrics and the interview.

Under the law, it says that you’re supposed to get that work authorization in 90 days or under 90 days. Lately, it’s been delayed. There’s a lot going on in immigration so the work permits have been delayed for longer than 90 days. In a lot of cases, we’ve seen people waiting four to six months to get those work permits.
Applicants need to make sure they do not miss their biometrics appointment. USCIS allows applicants to reschedule their appointments to a later date if they may not be able to appear for the scheduled appointment.
